White House Council on Environmental Quality Announces GreenGov Presidential AwardsGreen Innovation Award: Barbara C. Lippiatt, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Department of Commerce Gaithersburg, MD

Barbara Lippiatt has developed the Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) Program.  This software tool measures the environmental performance of building materials and bio-based products using a life-cycle assessment from manufacturing through product use, maintenance, and disposal. Her vision has resulted in a practical tool for sustainability performance measurement that is unbiased, science-based, quantitative, transparent, and comprehensive.

White House Council on Environmental Quality selected Department of Commerce (DOC) Energy Management Team for the Presidential Awards for Leadership in Federal Energy Management.   Members of the DOC Presidential Energy Award team were James Boyd (NOAA), John Bollinger (NIST), Jana Brooks (OS), William Freeman (NOAA), Rosaline Hill (OS), Jatin Patel (NIST), Joseph Prebble (OS), Robert Scinta (OS), and Genevieve Walker.

The DOC team received the award for their efforts and leadership in promoting and improving energy use in facilities and operations.  Energy intensity across the Department has been reduced19.9 percent from FY2003 and water intensity has been reduced by 30 percent from 2007. DOC leverages in house staff, seeks commercial and Federal energy experts, and implements Energy Savings Performance Contracts and Utility Energy Service Contracts to help accomplish energy conservation goals. Employees creatively approach challenges through energy working groups, employee Green Teams, and energy awareness campaigns. DOC also established various interagency agreements to provide technical support for energy audits, renewable energy projects and sustainable buildings.
