National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Program

Location: Pavilion Room of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
The keynote speaker will be Frank H. Wu, author of Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White, and former Dean of Wayne State University Law School in Detroit, Michigan. He is also the co-author of Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment. In 2004, Professor Wu became the ninth Dean of Wayne State University Law School; he completed his tenure on May 12, 2008. His media appearances have included the Oprah Winfrey show, Now with Bill Moyers, Lehrer News hour, O’Reilly Factor, Book Notes with Brian Lamb, Talk Back Live on CNN, National Public Radio, Voice of America, Fox Movie Channel with George Takai, and the Al Franken show. He has hosted episodes of "Asian America," a PBS-syndicated television show.
The mistress of ceremonies for the program will be Nancy Yamada, General Assignment Reporter for WUSA 9 TV. She is a first generation Japanese-American and speaks fluent Japanese. The program also features Bertrand Mao, who is a renowned calligrapher and ink-brush painter. He has exhibited his artwork in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Taiwan, India, China, and Russia. Also providing musical selections will be Kimiko Shimada and the Japanese Choral Society of Washington. Ms. Shimada was a member of the Niki-Kai Opera Company of Japan, with degrees in opera studies from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and the National Verdi Conservatory in Milan, Italy. The chorus was invited to sing at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage in 2007, and again on April 4, 2008.
