Communications Security, otherwise known as COMSEC is a security discipline dealing with secure communications, i.e., Secure Telephones, Secure Faxes, etc. Those individuals who are required to use these instruments to accomplish their jobs are required to abide by guidelines set forth by the National Security Agency (NSA).

Additionally, when required to use COMSEC equipment within the Department of Commerce, the COMSEC accountability briefing provided below must be read, signed and submitted to the COMSEC Custodian prior to you using any COMSEC piece of equipment.

Within the NOAA HQ’s, there are a number of COMSEC accounts. Each account will have at least one custodian. Each account also has an account number that is assigned by NSA.
