Policy Statement on Equal Employment Opportunity

2009 Secretarial Policy Statement on Equal Employment Opportunity

The United States of America is truly the land of equal opportunity for all. When my grandfather came here 100 years ago from China, he believed that this country was a place of promise, in which all could work to their potential, contribute, excel, and make better lives for themselves and their families. We remain committed to the guidingprinciple that with mutual respect for all, we best serve our people, our democracy, andour way of life, and continue to achieve greatness as a Nation.

The Department of Commerce is a leading force for creating economic progress and innovation. As we continue to foster the conditions for economic growth and opportunity by promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, competitiveness, and environmental stewardship, our commitment to the following principles will enhance our ability to carry out the mission of the Department.

The Department of Commerce does not tolerate discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex (including sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination), sexual orientation, national origin, age (40 years of age and over), or disability (physical or mental), including the provision of reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants and employees with disabilities. Retaliation against those who initiate discrimination complaints or otherwise oppose discrimination and harassment is strictly prohibited.

We seek to resolve workplace conflicts in a prompt, impartial, confidential, nondiscriminatory, and constructive manner, and without fear of reprisal. We encourage all Commerce employees to use the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Program as a valuable tool in resolving Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) disputes.

Equal employment opportunity is a bedrock principle of our country. It is the foundation for good business and sound governance practices. We expect all managers, supervisors, and employees to carry out their duties in accordance with the principles of this policy.

Secretary Gary Locke
